Day 1: Agadir to Ouarzazate

Our desert excursion commences at dawn as we depart from Agadir. En route, we make a captivating stop at the ancient ramparts of Taroudant city, immersing ourselves in its resplendent history and irresistible charm. Our journey then continues to Taliouine, renowned as the saffron production hub of Morocco, where we visit the Saffron Cooperative—a captivating establishment that provides profound insights into the saffron cultivation industry.

Next, we set our sights on the magnificent Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah, the largest Kasbah in Morocco and a UNESCO World Heritage site. This awe-inspiring red earth fortress stands majestically along the ancient road of the Kasbahs, showcasing the architectural marvels of the region. We then proceed to Ouarzazate, known as the “Hollywood of Africa,” owing to its impressive film studios that have hosted renowned movies such as “Gladiator” and “The Sheltering Sky.” Here, you will check into your Riad/Hotel for an exquisite dinner and a serene night’s repose.

Day 2: Ouarzazate to Merzouga Desert

As the sun ascends over Ouarzazate, we embark on the mesmerizing “Road of the Thousand Kasbahs,” where captivating sandcastles seemingly emerge from the arid landscape. Our adventure leads us to Kalaat Mgouna, famously known as the “Roses City” for its vibrant rose cultivation and annual rose festival in May. From there, we continue to the breathtaking Dades Valley and Tinghir, where we will witness the resplendence of the Todra Valley. Marvel at the panoramic vistas of ancient mud Berber villages overlooking the valley and explore the majestic Todra Gorge, a haven for rock climbers.

Our journey then guides us to Erfoud and Rissani, where we will indulge in a delectable luncheon. Subsequently, we make our way to the village of Merzouga, where your camel awaits you. Accompanied by an experienced camel handler, embark on a thrilling camel ride through the enigmatic sand-sea of the Erg Chebbi dunes. As the sun sets, casting mesmerizing hues across the horizon, you will be treated to a traditional Moroccan dinner accompanied by melodious music around a campfire. Your evening spent in a luxurious desert encampment or a traditional Berber nomadic tent promises a truly enchanting experience.

Day 3: Merzouga Desert to Ouarzazate

As dawn breaks, we bid farewell to the serene desert landscape and return to Merzouga on camelback. Delight in a sumptuous breakfast and rejuvenating shower at your riad in Merzouga before embarking on the next leg of our captivating journey. Our path winds through the mesmerizing landscapes of Morocco’s south as we make our way back to Ouarzazate.

Leaving Merzouga behind, we venture towards Rissani, formerly known as Sijilmassa, the historical foundation of the Alaouite dynasty—the ruling family of Morocco. Immerse yourself in the rich tapestry of traditional Moroccan culture as you explore this town, where veiled women and hooded men evoke an ambiance of old-world charm.

Continuing our drive, we traverse the majestic Todra Gorge and the stunning Dades Gorge. Marvel at the towering red cliffs, standing tall at a staggering 300 meters, as you navigate the winding roads. These natural wonders provide an awe-inspiring backdrop for photographers and rock climbers alike.

Day 4: Ouarzazate – Taliouine - Agadir

On our final day of this indelible desert expedition, we savor a delectable breakfast in Ouarzazate before embarking on a scenic drive towards Agadir. As we bid adieu to Ouarzazate, we make our way to Taznakht, renowned for its exquisite Berber gelims and carpets. Take this opportunity to explore the local craftsmanship and witness the artistry of Berber weavers.

Our journey continues as we traverse the Tizi-n-Ikhsane and Tizi-n-Tighatine passes, offering breathtaking vistas of the surrounding landscapes. A stopover in Taliouine, the heart of Morocco’s saffron growing region, allows us to immerse ourselves in the vibrant hues and fragrant scents of this precious spice. Indulge in a mouthwatering luncheon before embarking on the road once again.

As we venture further, we arrive at Taroudant, often referred to as the “Little Marrakech.” This enchanting town, with its bustling souks and impressive ramparts, provides a glimpse into the traditional Moroccan way of life. Explore the vibrant markets and witness the lively atmosphere that characterizes this hidden gem.

Finally, we reach our destination—Agadir—where our memorable desert expedition comes to a close. Reflect upon the unforgettable experiences and cherished memories created during this extraordinary odyssey through Morocco’s diverse landscapes.

What an absolutely dreamy vacation! Thanks to our exceptional driver, Ahmed, we were able to explore a remarkable portion of this stunning country. The journey into the desert at Merzouga was simply magical. Meeting Yousuf and traversing the dunes was an unforgettable experience. The camel ride at sunset, under the mesmerizing black sky adorned with countless stars and a radiant full moon, was truly awe-inspiring. The entire staff at the camp was incredibly hospitable, friendly, and went above and beyond to ensure that our two-night stay in a luxurious tent was nothing short of unforgettable.
