Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About the 3-Day Marrakech to Merzouga Tour

Is 3 days enough for a Sahara desert tour from Marrakesh?

Yes — 3 days is the most popular and practical duration for a Marrakesh to Merzouga desert tour, and it covers all the essential highlights. Day 1 takes you through the High Atlas Mountains, Aït Ben Haddou, and Ouarzazate. Day 2 passes through Todra Gorge and ends with a sunset camel trek into Erg Chebbi. Day 3 offers a magical sunrise before returning to Marrakesh. While a 5-day tour allows a slower, deeper exploration with extra time at each stop, 3 days is perfectly sufficient to see the Sahara, ride camels, sleep in the desert, and visit Morocco’s most iconic landmarks.

How far is Merzouga from Marrakesh?

Merzouga is approximately 550–560 km (340 miles) from Marrakesh, which would be roughly 9–10 hours of non-stop driving. On this 3-day tour, the journey is split over two days with an overnight stay in the Dades Valley, making each day’s driving around 4–5 hours — always broken up with scenic stops for photos, walks, and lunch.

What is included in Stylia Tours' 3-day desert tour from Marrakesh?

The tour includes: private air-conditioned vehicle and English-speaking driver-guide; hotel accommodation with dinner and breakfast in Dades Valley; overnight stay in a luxury private Berber desert camp with dinner and breakfast; sunset and morning camel trek in Erg Chebbi; guided visit to Aït Ben Haddou UNESCO site; and pick-up and drop-off at your Marrakech hotel or riad. Lunches, personal expenses, and optional activities such as quad biking or sandboarding are not included.

What should I pack for a 3-day Sahara desert tour?

Pack a small backpack for the desert camp night — large luggage stays safely in the vehicle. Essential items: sunglasses, sunscreen, hat, comfortable walking shoes, and light layers for cool desert nights (temperatures can drop to 5–10°C in winter). A light scarf doubles as sun protection and a useful layer in the desert breeze.

Are showers available at the Merzouga desert camp?

Yes, showers are available at the Merzouga desert camp. The luxury tents include a private bathroom with a shower for your comfort.

Can this 3-day tour end in Fez instead of returning to Marrakesh?

Yes! If your onward travel continues north, Stylia Tours can arrange for the tour to finish in Fez rather than returning to Marrakesh. This is a popular option for travellers planning a loop around Morocco. Please request this at the time of booking so we can adjust the Day 3 route and pricing accordingly.

What is the best time of year for a Marrakesh to Merzouga desert tour?

The best seasons are spring (March–April) and autumn (September–November) when daytime temperatures are warm (20–30°C) and the desert is at its most comfortable. Summer (June–August) sees midday temperatures exceed 40°C in the Sahara — tours run but require more careful timing. Winter (December–February) offers cold nights (sometimes near 0°C) but spectacularly clear skies for stargazing and dramatic, crowd-free dune landscapes.

Is the tent at the Merzouga desert camp private?

Yes — your tent at the Berber desert camp is completely private and reserved exclusively for you or your group. Each tent features comfortable bedding and electricity outlets (including USB ports) for charging your devices.

Wi-Fi is available at the desert camp, and our vehicles are also equipped with Wi-Fi for your convenience during the journey.

What's the Experience of Staying at a Sahara Desert Camp Like?

One of the most exceptional experiences distinguishing our tours is the private luxury camp located in the Sahara. The tents boast ample space adorned with vibrant Moroccan textiles, and an inviting outdoor lounge area allows for mesmerizing sunset views and stargazing under the breathtaking night sky. With the tranquility far from the hustle and bustle of other camps, guests will relish the sensation of having the entire desert to themselves.

3-Day Marrakesh to Merzouga Desert Tour — What to Expect

1

Day 1 · Approx. 5 Hrs Driving

Marrakech → Tizi n’Tichka → Aït Ben Haddou → Ouarzazate → Dades Valley
Your driver-guide will pick you up from your Marrakesh hotel or riad at 7:00 AM. The day begins with a scenic journey across the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka pass (2,260 m), Morocco’s highest paved road, offering sweeping views of Berber villages perched on the hillsides.

After descending into the pre-Saharan region, your first major stop is Aït Ben Haddou — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Morocco’s most iconic ksars (fortified villages). This ancient city of earthen and straw structures has served as the backdrop for films such as Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia, and Game of Thrones. Your guide will share the fascinating history of the Glaoui tribal leaders who once controlled these trade routes.

Next, a short drive brings you to Ouarzazate, known as the “Hollywood of Africa,” where you can glimpse the famous film studios that have hosted numerous international productions. The journey continues east through the Skoura oasis and the Rose Valley, arriving in the Dades Valley for your first overnight stay. Dinner and breakfast are included at your hotel.

2

Day 2: The Desert Day

Dades Valley → Todra Gorge → Merzouga Erg Chebbi — Sunset Camel Trek & Berber Camp
After breakfast, continue east along the Road of 1,000 Kasbahs, passing Berber villages and ancient fortified granaries. The next highlight is Todra Gorge — a dramatic canyon where the Todra River has carved 300-meter walls just 10 meters apart. Take a short walk through the canyon and stop at a local café.

By mid-afternoon you pass through Tinghir and Erfoud, famous for its marine fossils, before the first breathtaking view of the Erg Chebbi dunes appears on the horizon — a vast sea of golden sand rising up to 150 meters. This is the moment most travellers remember for a lifetime.

At Merzouga you swap the vehicle for a camel and begin your sunset camel trek into the dunes, arriving at your luxury Berber desert camp in time for a spectacular desert sunset. The evening brings a traditional Moroccan dinner, Berber music around the campfire, and the most extraordinary stargazing you will experience anywhere on earth — there is zero light pollution in the Sahara. Sleep in a comfortable private tent.

3

Day 3: Return Journey

Merzouga Sunrise → Draa Valley → Ouarzazate → Marrakesh
Rise before dawn for one of the most spectacular sights in North Africa: sunrise over the Erg Chebbi dunes. The sky transforms from deep violet to blazing amber as the sun crests the sand. After breakfast at the camp, camels carry you back to Merzouga where you shower at the lodge before the return journey.

The return route south takes you through the lush Draa Valley — Morocco’s longest valley, lined with thousands of date palms — and through the historic trading village of Rissani, where you can browse a traditional Moroccan souk. Lunch is taken at a local restaurant in Ouarzazate.

The final leg crosses the High Atlas once more and arrives back in Marrakesh by early evening, in time for dinner in the medina. Your driver will drop you directly at your hotel or riad.
